Staying at my Aunt’s house is always an interesting experience.
- Her house is very big and very old, and has just as many quirks as my Aunt does.
Last summer I stayed with her for a few weeks, at first to visit, but then it turned into a :”working vacation” and I helped her make a lot of repairs and adjustments to her place. She is a funny lady, but since the place is so big and she is in a wheelchair, most of the rooms haven’t even been entered in months. It turns out that squirrels had gotten into the ductwork at some point, and built a little colony. I have no experience with HVAC systems or ductwork, but this issue didn’t have to do with the equipment, it was about the critters. Of course, I had about as much knowledge about squirrels as I do air conditioners, but with the animals I felt I could work something out. I tried luring them out of the ductwork with treats, but that did not work. Next I tried using rat traps, which I put inside all of the air vents, but the squirrels either outfoxed the traps or outmuscled them. Squirrels are much stronger than rats, apparently, because they were not coming out of the air ducts no matter what! I must have spent two full weeks chasing squirrels through air ducts, and I don’t believe I ever got rid of one of them. I decided to just seal off those air vents and ducts, and check back in the year to see if the squirrels died.
