When I was a kid, my mom worked all day and half of the night.
My sister and I often were at home alone when school was over.
My mom didn’t have a lot of choices, because my dad went to prison. My mom was doing her best to provide for both of us on the small income she was making. Most of the time my sister and I spent the afternoon in front of the television watching cartoons and after-school specials. My mom bought snacks that did not require us to use the oven or the microwave, so we ate a lot of Pop-Tarts, chips, and cereal. By the time I graduated from high school, I was 275 lb and the biggest kid in school. I got teased by all of my peers and I desperately wanted to make some changes. As soon as I started college, I started going to a fitness center. At first I walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes every day. I was exhausted after walking on the treadmill, but I needed to build up my endurance. I found out that the fitness center had some group classes and personal trainers as well. I didn’t have a lot of money to pay a personal fitness trainer every week, but I decided to speak with one and have a consultation so I could get some ideas that might help me lose weight. The personal fitness trainer took interest in me and decided to work out with me everyday at no cost. After six months, I had lost 50 lb and made a friend for life.
