He listened to all of our instructions and he did exactly as directed
Not every person in prison is a bum that lived on welfare or cheated the system. Some prisoners had jobs that require extensive education like lawyers, doctors, and dentists. Some prisoners have special skills from a lifetime of working in construction, electric work, or HVAC repair. I work as a guard in a medium security prison. Most of the guys have five to ten years in prison and none of them have been convicted of a violent crime or murder. It’s mostly drug dealers, car thieves, and burglars to be honest. When we had an issue with the heat in cell block D, one of the prisoners told me that he could fix the problem. The guy explained the problem with the what and he certainly sounded like he was knowledgeable. I looked up the guy’s record and I saw that he did work for a commercial HVAC company before getting five years for ecstasy possession. I decided to uncuff the guy and let him out of his cell. I thought it wouldn’t hurt if he could fix the heating problem. After all, I had three additional armed guards by my side at all times. In less than two hours, the guy had the heating problems fixed and he never misbehaved one time. He listened to all of our instructions and he did exactly as directed. We had heat all night and we didn’t have to wait for maintenance to come fix the problem in the morning. That guy got two breakfast trays in the morning and a half pound of bacon from the kitchen.
