I was fortunate to get a great job in my field straight out of college.
- The position required me to move to a new location, but I didn’t mind.
I was actually thrilled to leave behind the snowy winters and sub zero temperature and head further south. However, I didn’t have a lot of time to get organized, pack up and relocate. I looked at all different listings for apartment buildings but wasn’t sure about what specific area I wanted to be in. I was hesitant to sign a year-long lease without first seeing the apartment in person. Most of the nicer apartment complexes required a large security deposit. While I was going to be making decent money once I started the job, I didn’t have any savings. I also didn’t have any furniture. I needed to find a place that was furnished. I ended up choosing an apartment on CraigsList. I was relieved that I was able to move in immediately and sign a month-by-month lease. The rent was extremely low, and the apartment was outfitted with a washer and dryer, tables, chairs, couch and bed. The downside was moving in with a roommate I’d never met and into an apartment I’d never seen. The place was old, outdated and not in the best location. I was just happy that the actual apartment was clean, and my roommate was really great. He helped me to get acclimated to the area and meet a group of friends. Six months later, he and I ended up moving into a much nicer apartment complex and signing a year-long lease.
